guljarIn 1963 during the making of  “Bandini”  by Bimal Roy Shailendra who was writing the lyrics for the songs had an  altercation with music director SD Burman. The great Burman Dada then refused to work with Shailendra.  All songs except one were already penned down by Shailendra.   A worried Bimal Roy was told about a Sikh gentleman Sampuran Singh Kalra, a motor car mechanic who had migrated from Pakistan & was looking for a chance to write lyrics. Reluctantly and with much less to expect desperate Bimal Roy agreed to meet him.

So Sampuran Singh was entertained and given the scene and story line. He then wrote his first film song which was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the lyrics were “Mora Gora rang layle,” With chance to write Just one song the gentleman had put all his mind and soul into it.
